HLP Klearfold has developed a versatile, protective, creative branding package to meet the fast-evolving needs of the cannabis market. The patent-pending Klearfold Keeper CR is what we believe is a first of its kind, transparent, fully customizable, child-resistant (CR) package. Consumer products marketers have used clear plastic cartons for decades to offer customers a glimpse of what’s inside, to provide exceptional shelf impact, to support premium product positioning, and to enhance brand performance. Now, HLP Klearfold offers these same performance attributes to medical and recreational cannabis products marketers, while exceeding child-resistance and senior-friendly criteria of the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), as defined in CFR Title 16, Part 1700.

Steve Frazier, President of HLP Klearfold, notes, “While creating this unique, transparent CR package, and testing to the CPSC protocol, we learned that kids are very motivated to get inside when they can see the contents. So it was critical we design a CR package that offered a level of security commensurate with paperboard-based CR packages. The Klearfold Keeper CR’s box-grade plastic substrate is significantly more durable than opaque paperboard and the package’s glue seams, often a failure point in paperboard CR cartons, are chemically-bonded to provide that added measure of security.”

Klearfold Keeper CR is a tray-and-sleeve style CR package. Its clear plastic substrate delivers product visibility and far greater tear resistance than the paperboard used in other tray-and-sleeve style CR cannabis packages. Also, the resiliency of the Klearfold Keeper CR substrate allows its simple but very effective locking mechanism to re-lock many times for multiple use products. Adding a wafer or security seal to the open end of the package provides tamper evidence.

Since sleeves are made from a clear substrate, printed graphics determine how much of the carton is opaque (printed) and how much transparency remains. This allows brand owners to expose as much, or as little, of their package’s contents as desired, whether they are selling vape cartridges, concentrates, pre-rolls, edibles, or other forms of cannabis. One-hundred percent ink coverage would result in a completely opaque Klearfold Keeper CR package.

Following the instructions printed on the package, an adult can easily unlock it with a thumb press on a release tab that extends from the face of the outer carton.

Pressing this release tab also disengages a locking tab on the internal vacuum-formed tray from a slot die-cut in the carton’s sidewall, allowing the tray to slide out.

To ensure that the tray remains connected to the outer carton at all times (an important child-resistant requirement for multi-use product packages), its locking tab snaps into a second slot toward the open end of the carton, preventing its complete removal. To relock the package, the tray is pushed back into the carton until the tab reengages the first locking slot.

Klearfold Keeper CR cartons are fully customizable, are available in a variety of sizes, and can be made from box-grade PET (polyester terephthalate) or RPET (recycled content PET), which contains 30% post-consumer recycled content. They are delivered pre-assembled, are easy to fill, and require no machinery to set-up or fill.

Klearfold Keeper CR is truly compelling transparent packaging that lets brands shine through, that stands out on a crowded shelf, and that supports marketing and merchandizing objectives, all while satisfying CPSC child-resistance standards.
