Animal Crackers bust out of their cages

Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco has redesigned its Barnum’s Animal Crackers packaging, in response to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA has been protesting the use of animals in circuses for more than 30 years, and they wrote a letter to Mondelez in the spring of 2016 calling for a redesign of its packaging, according to the Associated Press.

The redesign on the boxes is now on U.S. store shelves. It displays the familiar red and yellow and prominent “Barnum’s Animals” lettering, but shows the animals—a zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla wandering in the grass-land, side-by-side, instead of in a large cage.

“When PETA reached out about Barnum’s, we saw this as another great opportunity to continue to keep this brand modern and contemporary,” says Jason Levine, Mondelez’s chief marketing officer for North America, in a statement.

Nabisco has redesigned the boxes before, since the start of making the Barnum’s Animal crackers in 1902, but only for limited-editions.
