Newly Invented Edible Packaging Could Replace Single-Use Plastics

A new technology invented by Dr. Anne Lamp of Germany could allow for edible packaging to replace film, hard plastic and plastic coating in food packaging, Goodnet writes.

The young engineer’s company, Traceless, offers a home-compostable alternative to single-use plastic. With its technology, leftovers from the agricultural industry are used as raw material, which are then converted into the base material that’s used to manufacture the edible packaging.

The article contemplates: “So is edible packaging the replacement to single-use plastics we’ve been waiting for? Some challenges remain. These include the fact that edible packaging can be sensitive to different environments and should be treated carefully during storage and shipping. Besides, at least for now, the use of plastic is essential in some industries, such as in the field of medicine.”
