Printpack wins Gold DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation

Printpack is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Gold DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation for its new, cross-directional, laser-scored flow wrapper for Quaker Oats’ Granola Goes Nuts bars. Printpack shares this award with PepsiCo, with whom they jointly developed the technology. This innovative technology offers consumers an easy-open package which allows them to keep their hands clean during on-the-go eating occasions.

Jeff Boekeloo, Marketing and Technical Manager for Printpack says, “Quaker wanted an innovative way to open a bar wrapper that was different from what consumers are doing today. They wanted a wrapper with an easy-open feature that would allow for clean snacking due to sticky products, maintain current barrier requirements, and process well on commercial bar wrapping equipment. To make the challenge even more unique, Quaker wanted the wrapper to open in the cross direction rather than the machine direction. I am proud to say that Printpack and Quaker worked hand-in-hand to make this package a reality.”

The cross-directional, laser-scored opening feature on the horizontal flow wrapper provides a controlled, easy opening of the pack and the laser scoring applied above the metalized layer preserves the barrier properties and ensures the shelf life of the product.

Bernard Rioux, Global Packaging Leader and Program Leader for the DuPont Awards says, “The DuPont Packaging Awards honor innovations in the packaging supply chain that demonstrate excellence in technological advancement, responsible packaging and enhanced user experience while incorporating science, inspiration and creativity. The 2017 winners are true representations of how companies innovate and collaborate to solve industry problems.”

Inaugurated in 1986, the DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation is recognized globally as the leading packaging awards program. This program supports DuPont’s commitment to recognize excellence and inspire innovations in packaging. Each year an esteemed panel of independent judges award diamond, diamond finalist, gold or silver honors based on “excellence” ratings in one or all of three categories – Technological Advancement; Responsible Packaging; and Enhanced User Experience.
