Toothpaste Brand Opens Wallet in Switch to Aluminum Tubes

Dr. Sheffield’s has announced it will now package its fluoride-free charcoal toothpaste in aluminum metal tubes.

During the next several months, the nine-flavor lineup of Dr. Sheffield’s toothpastes will be transitioned to fully recyclable aluminum tubes. In a release, the brand said it reached the decision after researching various new packaging options to find a more eco-friendly solution.

“We made a significant investment into modern automated packaging equipment to allow us to manufacture toothpaste packaged in aluminum tubes at high speeds,” said Jeffrey Davis, CEO of Sheffield Pharmaceuticals, maker of Dr. Sheffield’s Naturals. “Although recyclable plastic tubes are certainly a more cost-effective option, plastic recycling has been a failure, and a recyclable plastic tube is less effective at preserving the quality of our product.”

Aluminum is the most recycled metal on the planet and can be recycled in perpetuity with no degradation. It’s estimated that more than 75 percent of aluminum ever produced in the U.S. is still in circulation.
