Go Lightweight and Gain Unmatched Branding Potential with Innovative Packaging Material

Brand owners and designers of luxury products can now gain greater consumer preference and improve sustainability scores with a multisensory substrate from BillerudKorsnäs, a global leader in sustainable paperboard and packaging technologies. Called BillerudKorsnäs White, brands can achieve greater visual and tactile appeal while using less packaging material. This innovation will be on display at the first annual Luxe Pack Los Angeles (Barkar Hangar, Santa Monica; Feb. 7-8), booth. C2.

BillerudKorsnäs White is made of primary wood fibers that are engineered to make the cartonboard exceptionally strong. It is an ideal material for packaging wines and liquors, cosmetics and beauty care, nutraceuticals, fine chocolate and confectionery, consumer electronics and other luxury products. Its unique construction and mix of Nordic fibers differ from SBS as well as other European boards available in North America. This formation allows impressive light-weighting and progressive shaping without compromising packaging strength. At the same time, the cartonboard’s proprietary triple-coating imparts a premium whiteness and surface smoothness for enhanced appeal. The material is pleasing to the touch and helps elevate the consumer experience and interaction with brands.

BillerudKorsnäs also offers expert consultation and sustainable design ideas through its Carton Solutions team. By providing pre-studies, prototype development and evaluations, Carton Solutions helps brand owners capture the consumer’s imagination with special shapes, lattice-work designs, dazzling pouring spouts and closures, windows, and other unique designs that are compelling and sustainable.

“Consumers of luxury brands prefer products that convey quality, perform well, and improve sustainability. We help North American brands do just that through precision engineering and by sourcing raw materials from responsibly managed forests,” says Inger Heinke, the company’s business development director, Cartonboard.

BillerudKorsnäs has the distinctive recognition for being listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index’s Containers and Packaging category as among the 10 percent most sustainable companies in the world. The company also has exceptionally high ranking with improved scores in WWF’s Environmental Paper Company Index 2017.

Plus, the corporation recently received a Gold rating from EcoVadis for the fourth year in a row. The annual evaluation of 30,000 suppliers shows that BillerudKorsnäs is among the top one percent of all companies assessed.

To meet increased demand from brands and converters in North America, BillerudKorsnäs recently opened a new facility in Chicago and expanded its staff of Cartonboard professionals.

In addition, the company has also made significant investments to expand capacities. Currently in construction is a new board machine at the Gruvön production site. The new machine will have an annual capacity of 550,000 tons of board, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world. Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2019.

“We stand ready to help the luxury segment innovate and go lighter to build brand loyalty and capture greater market share,” says Heinke.
